A Warm Welcome to St Wilfrid's

St. Wilfrids Centre is a charity which works with the statutory services and other agencies to support the homeless, the vulnerable and those who are socially excluded.

Welfare
We give practical support to overcome barriers of social exclusion particularly for those with high support needs unable to gain help elsewhere. Clients who self-refer and ‘drop-in’ are interviewed before admission whilst formal referrals come from social workers, mental health teams, psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses (CPN's) and GPs. We are probably the only Project in the North of England offering such a wide variety of services under one roof. These range from basic welfare through personal development and education to support for ‘move-on’ and possible meaningful employment. We aim to address the basic needs of excluded people and then help them to live with independence, self esteem and dignity.

Personal Development
In Sheffield there is insufficient provision of training and education for people with high support needs. We aim to reach the people that other Agencies are unable, to take on. Many of these have, for whatever reason, been unable to fit in with other services and are quickly overwhelmed by traditional forms of education. Often they cannot sustain concentration for long periods and can become erratic in their attendance.

Our programmes target these hard to reach learners who are unable to take advantage of other opportunities due to background, culture or disability. Some of those we help will achieve great things such as taking a computer course leading to employment. However, for others, just being able to concentrate on a cookery course and produce an edible meal can be the greatest boost to their self esteem. All have their own individual story and their needs can be intricate and complex.
